Urban Monkism: A philosophy I created in order to apply to my art, life, and ideology. In art it means finding beauty in the ugliness of the mundane. In life urban monkism is best described as simplicity by eliminating excess materialism and other such obsessions that degrade humanity's evolution. In the mind, urban monkism, is all about the challenging of personal beliefs whether right or wrong & opening a dialog.
Marcus R. Thomas was born in Columbus, Ohio on January 13th, 1979. He started his formal art training at age six after winning an international children's competition where his work was sent to China upon winning. After the competition with promises from his mother for private art lessons if he won. He then enrolled in the Central Ohio Art Academy under the instruction of Donna Boiman. One of only two students she had to attend all twelve years until he was eighteen during which time he won various awards at the local and state level. His studies there involved color theory, human & animal anatomy, art history, drawing, painting, pen & ink, mixed media, and sculpture. These classes are what formed his fundamental style heavily influenced by animals, color, and shape, and design. Before graduating high school he was accepted into the early program at Savannah College of Art & Design where he studied illustration and drawing. Upon completing the six week program he returned to Columbus, Ohio to complete his final year of high school. He then attended Savannah College of Art & Design from 1997 - 2006. His studies consisted of a general fine arts program consisting of sculpture, drawing, figure studies, installations, poetry, music composition, painting, art history, illustration, and poster design. These all helped to give him the tools needed to express himself technically, but his true inspiration was found in the least likely of places. The barbecue... Marcus R. Thomas with his strict dedication to art and unquestionable eagerness in search of his own style engulfed the southern life style as his own and adopted the event of the barbecue as his personal style. Later to be deemed by Brian Kiger as "Post Modern Barbequeism". Everything about barbecuing appealed to Marcus as both an artist and cook. He realized the correlation between what made a good barbecue and a good art show are one in the same. This epiphany was discovered in the last two years of his residency in Savannah, Georgia. To date Marcus R. Thomas is the sole creator and only artist working in this style constantly thriving to push the perimeters of the art while sticking with a strict rigidness to the production of art. Post Modern Barbequeism has now taken on not only the forms of mixed media and sculpture, but also poetry, literature, and plays.
